The accommodation crisis in Ibiza has reached critical levels, affecting businesses, residents, and seasonal workers alike. Urgent government intervention is essential to address this pressing issue and safeguard the island’s community and economy.

The root of the problem lies in an unsustainable rental market, characterised by skyrocketing prices and limited availability. As a business owner, I have witnessed the detrimental effects of this crisis on our operations and team members. Finding affordable, suitable housing for staff has become increasingly difficult, jeopardising our ability to maintain a happy, productive workforce.

To tackle this crisis, I propose that the government implement a targeted tax on landlords who rent properties to non-residents or individuals not earning their primary income on the island. This measure could incentivise landlords to prioritise residents and workers, easing the pressure on the rental market.

In addition, the government must invest in infrastructure and affordable housing initiatives. The accommodation crisis impacts more than businesses—it threatens the island’s essential services, including healthcare, education, policing, and transportation. Without adequate housing, these vital sectors face unbearable strain.

As a business owner, I am committed to supporting my team through this challenging time. We dedicate significant resources to searching for and securing accommodation for staff, often bearing the financial burden until reimbursement. These efforts are made without profit and come at great cost in terms of time, stress, and resources.

To further mitigate the impact, we have increased staff wages. However, this adjustment adds to the financial strain on businesses like ours. With high taxes, rising rental costs, and substantial operational expenses—including space rentals, products, and marketing materials—our margins are slim. Moreover, our six-month summer season is the only window to generate enough revenue to sustain operations year-round. The accommodation crisis further limits our resources, making it increasingly difficult for businesses to shoulder these burdens.

The Ibiza accommodation crisis requires immediate and decisive government action. Targeted taxes on landlords, infrastructure investments, and collaboration among stakeholders are crucial to mitigating the impacts and preserving the island’s unique balance.

Failure to act risks irreparable damage to the community and vital industries like hospitality and tourism. I urge policymakers to prioritise this issue and take bold steps to resolve the crisis before it’s too late. Our future depends on it.
